Bar Mitzvah A Celebration of Coming of Age

Posted by User Imageadmin on October 31, 2008

Originally, Bar Mitzvah (translated: man of the commandment) signified the coming of age of Jewish males, in which they had gained the age of accountability, a time when he was responsible for his own actions. In Biblical times, the age of twenty signified the coming of age, but in Talmudic times, the age changed to thirteen, and in recognition of the son’s change in status, instead of the modern celebratory bar mitzvah, the father said a simple blessing praising God, because he was no longer responsible for anything his son might do. At bar mitzvah, the Jewish male can participate fully in his religion, and be held responsible for following the dictates of the Jewish faith. Bar Mitzvah is the symbolic rite of passage from being a child, to being an adult, and fully participating in the adult facets of Judaism, laying tifillin, and being called up for the reading of the Torah.

Traditionally, the celebration begins during a service, in the synagogue, followed by a celebration dinner with family and friends. Many Jewish families then throw a party to celebrate Bar Mitzvah. Some travel to the Holy Lands, some have festive celebrations in clubs, or in their homes, and in some strict sects, there is no celebration outside the synagogue.

Larger cities have catering and party services who do all the work for the Bar Mitzvah, including supervision. If these services are available, a great hall is normally rented, and the guests all bring gifts for the one who has attained Bar Mitzvah. Often these are not co-ed parties, but occasionally they are. In coed parties, music is supplied by a DJ, there are lights, dancing, party food, drinks, and revelry. One particularly fun idea for Bar Mitzvah is a sports theme. Tables can be decorated in a sports motif, and games like Nerf basketball, baseball, and football can be set up. If the weather is pleasant, the celebration can be outdoors, and real games of basketball, softball, and touch football can be organized. The basketballs, softballs, bats, and footballs can be personalized, and each of the youthful guests can take one home as a party favor. For a Jewish youth, becoming a Bar Mitzvah is a rite of passage like no other, and no matter how simple or elaborate the celebration, it is the religious implications are life altering.

You would think a 60.00 Baby Monitor system could work for longer than a year….but no luck.

I loved this monitor for a year, but now it completely blanks out and cuts off randomly. I have woken up twice now to my daughter in my room (she is 2, and recently switched to a twin bed which she can get in and out of) I can usually hear her on the monitor climbing out of the bed, and then I can meet her in the hall, or in her room, but since the monitor decides when it wants to work, and when it doesn’t, I can’t monitor her safety at night. I am fed up with Fischer Price, this is the second time this has happened.

Review date : 2008-05-27
We have used this every day and night for 2 years and love it! We have never had a problem with it shutting off suddenly. It really does have a great reach, we can use it when we are outside doing yardwork or playing with our oldest son–and we live on a fairly large lot. The only thing I don’t like: one of the receivers stopped working after the first year, but it doesn’t matter since we only need one. I’m now trying to find another monitor for our second child. I’ll probably end up buying this one again since we love it so much!

Review date : 2008-05-23
This product works really well for about 6-7 months, after which time it begins to have "black outs" where all sound cuts out for up to a minute. We have a white noise machine that we can hear humming over the monitor, so when it cuts out suddenly we know. If your baby’s room was typically silent, it would be impossible to know. Eventually, it just stops turning on when you click the switch, even after it has just been charged. I know that some companies make products that are designed to fail eventually so that you are forced to buy a new one, throw the old one away, and contribute to both the growth of the economy as well as the growth of landfills… but a baby monitor? Come on.

Flower Tips For Party Decorations

Posted by User Imageadmin on October 31, 2008

Flowers are a popular accessory to use for party decorations but, you may need a few tips to help your decorations go from fair to fabulous. Decide what kinds of flower go with the kind of party you’re going to throw. Roses are romantic, tulips are elegant, daisies or sunflowers are whimsical and carnations are casual.

You can use real or silk flowers for your centerpieces or for table top decorations. You may want to arrange centerpieces ahead of time so that all of your party preparations don’t have to be done at the last minute. Silk flowers are perfect for this accommodation.

If you want to help fresh flowers last longer there are a few things you need to do. Make sure that you use only healthy flowers. There should be no brown spots or wilting pedals. Cut the stems of the flowers at an angle underwater, place the flowers in lukewarm water and add a little lemon-lime soda to the water to give your flowers an extra punch.

If you are using flowers for centerpieces keep the arrangements high for a buffet table, low and long for a sit-down dinner and small and scaled down for smaller tables. Use unique and inventive items to place the flowers in. Look for elegant shaped vases, beautiful bowls or even silver or metal trays.

To create interest and beauty to your centerpieces fill the bottom of clear vases with colored stone or add floating candles to a centerpiece with few flowers. Using an online florist such as www.florists.tk will save you time. Shopping on the internet you can find all of the supplies you will need to create a wonderful setting for your party.

Another flower tip is to only use the petals of flowers in your decorating. Using this method is a great way to use your own flowers that are not picture perfect. Sprinkle pedals on table tops and other flat surfaces with a few candles as your decorative statement.

Mrs. Party… Gail Leino is the internet’s leading authority on selecting the best possible party supplies, using proper etiquette and manners while also teaching organizational skills and fun facts. Lovely flowers, centerpieces and gifts are available online. Here is a store that specializes in online Flower Delivery.

Do You Want To Be A Bodybuilding Champion - The Power Behind The PEN!

Posted by User Imageadmin on October 30, 2008

IT ALL STARTED ON A TYPICAL NOVEMBER MORNING back in nineteen eighty seven.
Life was changing for me quickly; I just didn’t realize it at the time. I had been successful in some bodybuilding contests as a teenager, but that was really as far as I wanted to go in the sport. I worked at a local construction company as an architect. Each day in the office started out the same; grab a cup of coffee and sit down at my desk. Being a designer, you either had a mouse, pencil or cup of coffee in your hand.

It all began that morning when I looked over at a sheet of paper that lay next to my
computer with these words that read; I AM MR. MICHIGAN 1988. At the time I
thought it was funny and threw it away. Two weeks later, I realized I had written it
again. Only this time the words were written more than once. I threw it away and
forgot about it,again. A few days later, I caught myself doing it, again. I stopped and
just shook my head and said, “Could I? No, I’m not doing it again.” I thought, “I have
accomplished all I wanted to. But, what if I could win? Are you kidding? Stop kidding
yourself Greg!”

This conversation went on in my head for days. I found myself over the next three
weeks writing the same thing, I AM MR. MICHIGAN 1988. Could I? Well, if I do I have
to make a decision by January 1, 1988, due to the contest date in April. This would
give me four months to prepare. What I am saying? I thought I was finished. I kept
writing and writing and writing every day through the month of December. Then I
just decided, Ok, one more time, I’ll do it.

I don’t know when it happened, but it did. You see in the sport of bodybuilding
there are many variables involved. You can not predict what will happen. Contest
preparation is mostly the science of nutrition and mental preparation. And of course
doing your time in the gym.

However, even if you do all the hard work, when you’re dealing with the human
body and are judged on your looks, anything can play a part in what the final
product will look like. Changes can come at the last minute due to nerves, water
retention, sickness, over-training, presentation flaws or in a lot of cases, mental
fatigue. But this time, something began to happen with my body along the way.

I continued to write that simple statement over and over again. Day after day, after
day, and with that what started out as a denial now became a dream. So I wrote and
wrote and worked hard and ate right.

It was now the beginning of March and I had three weeks left. At this point, my
mental training had kicked in. Time and time again, I saw athletes fall to the
demons in their heads. The self sabotaging thoughts of food depervation, self
esteem issues, only to crack at the very end. I was no exception. I had many bad
days. Some days were per hell. I didn’t want to get out of bed at times. I just didn’t
have the energy. But I found a way. I kept writing, and writing until my hand could
write no more, I AM MR. MICHIGAN 1988.

The days continued to pass, getting closer and closer to the contest day. I have to
admit, by two weeks from the contest I just wanted it to end. But, I could not quit. I
had made a promise to myself never to quiet. Goals change decisions do not. The
contest was on Saturday, so by Monday training wise I had done all I could do. Now I
prepared for the day, keeping my nutrition finely tuned and absolutely did not break
down mentally. I stayed focused on the bigger picture. Due to my fatigue level, my
training partner and his wife drove me up to Detroit on Friday so we could spend
the night and get a good night’s sleep.

I never said bodybuilding was not an extreme sport. Part of the goal to achieve
success was through training and human physiology manipulation. I needed to get
rid of as much fat and water as I possible could and still stay functional. The fat
came off through diet and training over the past four months and if all was fine in
my body, the water would go in the last few days. Now let me tell you, through all of
this I kept writing, and writing and writing.

Friday evening I went to bed about three pounds over what I thought I should be on
competition day. My weight class was 154 to 176 pounds, Friday evening I weighed
174 cool, but not good lean enough to win. You see, it was not good enough for the
judge’s criteria just to be lean; you had to resemble a medical anatomy chart. This
required, on a temporary basis, for you to lose as much water around your muscles
as possible. This was science, luck, and faith at its best.

I awoke early around five. My friends were still sleeping in the same room. I didn’t
feel any different as I went into the bathroom to weigh myself. What I saw on the
scale didn’t seem possible. I stepped off and back on at least a half a dozen times. It
just could not be. My contest check in time was five hours away, but it was time for
my roommates to get up, so I yelled. Still not believing the scales I dropped all my
clothes and at the same time dropped my jaw. It just was not possible. Without
going to the bathroom for eight hours, it was not possible to lose four pounds of
water. The water in my body, under the skin, covering the fine tuned muscle fibers
had out of thin air disappeared.

My training partner, his wife and I walked into the theater in preparation to the
check in. As we entered my friends wife stopped leaned over and said to the both of
us, “Can you feel that?” I looked at the both of them and said, “Feel what?” That
thick ego filled air. Honestly, I turned to her and said, “I matters not what I receive
today in trophies or recognition. I have already won.

No one can take away what I have received over the last few years.” I thought of
Pumping Iron and Arnold it was then I realized what he new before the show. It just
didn’t matter what place I recieved, there was no pressure. As I checked in, it was
interesting and comical to see affects of transferring internal pressure to your fellow
competitors. They looked at you like little boys who lost there best friend.

It was night time now, I final time out on stage in front of thousands. Yes, this was
it. My career was ending no matter what the results would be. My journey was now
complete.

As I heard my name called as the winner of not only my weight class, but the overall
winner it was announced you are MR. MICHIGAN 1988. It was at that moment I
realized the Power behind the Pen. What started out as a slip of the ink, four months
later had transformed my mind and now my body into the very words that had been
written so many times before. I can not explain it, but to this very day I know in the
bottom of my heart, if it was not for power behind the pen, and that deep desire to
win I would not have accomplished so much in so little time.

I don’t care what it is in life, if you want it, write it down. Everyday, all the time.
Sooner of later your mind will help you achieve it. Never, ever underestimate the
power behind the pen.

Our twin boys are now five months old, and we are continuing to love these car seats. The triangular-shaped handle is awesome … allows for easy turning and shifting from one hand to another. The sun shade is exceptionally large and covers almost the entire seat — great when it’s raining outside. Making adjustments to the head rest and the straps is a simple process — and best of all is the easy handle/lever system to take the seat off of the base. Also, check out the Consumer Reports reviews — this car seat is tops for safety. We’d definitely buy the same seat again.

There’s no doubt that this is THE Cadillac of infant car seats. I gave this as a gift and, of course, the manufacturer of this little beauty made me a super hero. You can’t go wrong with this product!!!

Review date : 2008-07-18
I recently purchased this car seat for my newborn son and I agree that the spanish only directions caught me off guard and made what should’ve been a quick installation in my new honda civic take about 30 minutes. However, once my husband and I figured out how to attach the latch things and seat belt we were good to go. I suggest that anyone who purchases this infant seat refer to the pictures/stickers on the actual car seat to help get it installed. Unless you read spanish just throw the directions out. Besides that I like it. Nice handle, light weight, great price for a good product.

Review date : 2008-01-11
FOUR STARS!!! We got this seat because it’s attractive and it has high safety ratings. We are a little sorry we did! We should have sent it back and gotten something else the minute we opened it and found Spanish only installation instructions…no English!!! There are photo instructions on the back of the seat also, but we would have preferred written English instructions for at least FAQ and troubleshooting, as we did not feel that we were able to get the seat in at quite the right angle and never did figure out why. Our daughter is now 11 mos and 18 lbs. The straps are starting to be too tight, so we doubt we’ll be able to make it to the 22 lbs the seat promises, but we’ve probably fared better than most do with infant seats! Also, to move the handle up and down is very difficult, as is buckling the crotch straps. I do realize it’s a 5 point harness, but other seats handle the crotch buckle far easier. The seat is just not as easy and pleasant to use as I think it could be. But we’ve definitely gotten our money’s worth and according to the safety ratings it’s worth the trouble. I would now change my star rating to four stars after nearly a year’s use, but I can’t figure out how to edit the star rating.

The game also calculates the equivalent of DDR dancing to common exercise activities, and can keep track of a player’s weight as well.

The built-in workout features have inspired many DDR fans to make playing DDR their primary source of exercise, and some have built entire weight-loss regimens around the game. However, as with all new diet or exercise plans, it is recommended that one discusses the changes with their doctor

Exercise and Losing Weight for Life - Avoid the #1 Mistake Everyone Makes!

Posted by User Imageadmin on October 28, 2008

Do you ever feel like you are working out so hard and nothing seems to happen? You just can’t seem to lose that last few pounds, increase your benchpress or tighten up those triceps. Why?

Why do doctors only recommend that you take antibiotics for a short period of time?
They only seem to be affective for a short while. The body builds up an immune
system against them.

One of the biggest mistakes we have all made in our quest for good health is to get
in our comfort zones by doing the same old workout routine and eating plan. Guess
what? Your body adapts to these daily routines, too.

Exercise and losing weight is a constant pushing of your body’s mental and physical
potentials. Arnold Swartzneggar once said, “Life is about the last three reps of an
exercise.” In order to get anything out of it, you have to push yourself.”

This is hard to explain, but after about ten weeks on the same workout plan and
after eating the same foods at each meal, the body adapts and the heart rates go
down. The muscles are not overloaded anymore. What is the answer then?

If you learn no other key to weightloss or exercising learn this: you have to
constantly shock your body into progressing. If you can keep you body from getting
used to things you will have a better chance of losing weight and keeping longevity
with your workout.

However, this will take some thinking ahead on your part. If you start getting edgy,
poor sleeping patterns, soreness or any other unusual aches, this is probably what
is happening. Try to avoid the number one mistake people make in allowing your
body to figure out what your game plan is. Do this and you will have a good chance
of sticking with the program.

Piano Student’s Mom Jumps in Lion’s Den

Posted by User Imageadmin on October 27, 2008

"My 6 year old daughter really loves the piano and wants to learn to play, but when I try to help her she gets very upset with me. What should I do? Help!"

The piano mom who asked this question has jumped into a Lion’s Den that I call the parent trap. If this is you, don’t feel bad, I’m the angel who can help you out. But first, let me explain how this trap works.

When parents move out of the parental role and into the role of piano teacher, young children can become confused and anxious. Why? Because, the expectations of children are that Mom and Dad will always play a specific role that protects their emotional security. Because children must have their emotional needs to feel loved and secure met before they can learn, they may refuse to allow a parent to be the piano teacher, even when they want to learn. And surprisingly, the child who really wants to play the piano may resist a parent’s help even more! So, how does a parent get out of this trap?

Be supportive without being in control. From the time your child approached the age of two they have most likely been sending you the same conflicting message over and over: I need you - Let me do it myself! Get used to this because it doesn’t really go away when kids get older. To deal with this parents get two choices. They get to be in charge, or they get to be in control. But parents can’t do both, they have to make a choice. Now you might be thinking this is some kind of a joke. These choices are the same. Not so - they are very different.

Being in control requires parents to make all choices for children without their participation in the decision, such as when to practice, what songs to learn, and how fast they should progress. The problem here is this ignores children’s need for independence. To gain control, students may actively resist practicing at the appointed time and become angry, or become very passive, claiming they are just unable to learn new skills.

Being in charge recognizes children’s needs for independence but provides needed support and guidance. It allows children to make choices among options you identify for them, which lets them do it themselves while still receiving needed protection. To stay out of the Lion’s Den, enroll your child in piano lessons with an instructor who follows an authoritative teaching model and continue this model at home.

Authoritative Model Teaches Ownership and Responsibility

  • Parent/Teacher is in charge of setting appropriate consequences for their child’s behaviors. Child is given choices to make reasonable decisions within protected limits where they can learn from their mistakes.
  • Child learns to take initiative and trusts their ability to make intelligent decisions and to act responsibly.
  • Child learns to be assertive and can ask adults for information and guidance, but accepts ownership and responsibility for their decisions.

How can parents get out of the Lion’s Den and support their young in piano at home?

Jump Out!

The easiest way to jump out of the parent trap is to reverse roles. For example, after your child comes home from piano lessons, ask them to teach you what they’ve learned, because you want to learn it too! This lets your child be in control as they share their special piano knowledge with you. Kids can’t resist this. It’s just so much fun to be the teacher, and children love to reverse roles! Your young teacher will probably even correct your playing, and tell you that you’re doing it all wrong, especially if you play their song perfectly! So, be wiling to make a few silly mistakes that your little teacher can have fun correcting. Just don’t get defensive. I can guarantee you’ll get a lot of mileage out of this strategy that keeps piano moms and dads from falling into the lion’s den!

Trembling Tarantulas

Posted by User Imageadmin on October 26, 2008

Supplies
A spool of fine-gage black wire (approximately 22 gage)
You can find this in the floral section of your local craft store
Wire cutters or strong scissors
Votive candle

Directions
1. Cut twelve 12″ lengths of wire. Place 4 of the lengths side by side and lightly twist them, just until they hold together in a loose “rope.” Repeat this process three times, until you have four ropes.

2. Place the four ropes side by side and bind them together by taking the end of the wire still on your spool and wrapping it tightly around the center of your bundle of ropes. Continue wrapping wire around the center of your bundle until it is secure. Now wrap the wire around in larger, loose circles to form a messy wire ball (approx 1″ - 2″ diameter). This ball is your spider’s body and the four ropes sticking out on each side of the ball are his legs.

3. Arrange his legs by twisting and bending them until the spider stands on his own. Place a lit votive in front of your creepy new friend and watch his shadow dance in the flickering light.
