Piano Lessons For Children Helping Your Older Child Learn To Love Music

Posted by User Imageadmin on September 30, 2008

Helping your older piano student learn to love music and keep playing piano for a life-time is really easy. All you have to do is clearly define your parental role and your piano student will know what to do.

Older children in piano lessons need a different kind of support from their parents than younger children do. Older children who want to be their own person become very confused when parents start being the student and the piano teacher has to be the parent. For older children piano lessons involve three clearly defined roles - the student?s role, the teacher?s role, and the parent?s role. When the boundaries defined by these roles become fuzzy, older children do not learn how to take responsibility for their success and feel their effort is unimportant. This is because there is nothing that drives a kid crazier than to have two adults telling them different things and being unable to please them both. Here are three Universal Laws of Piano Lessons for Parents of Children Ages 12 and Up. Follow these and your older child in piano lessons will be a lot more likely play piano for a life-time.

1. The Law of Who is the Student -

Your child is the piano student, not you. It is not your job to decide what music your child will play. That?s the student?s and the teacher?s job.

2. The Law of Piano Progress -

Progress is the student?s department. They will make the progress they want to make. If you don?t compare them to every other piano student you?ve ever known, they?ll probably make more progress.

3. The Seven to One Law of Piano Support -

Give your child in piano lessons seven encouragements to every one criticism. If you use the word ?but? in your encouragement it doesn?t count.

Follow these Universal Laws for Parents of Piano Students and your child in piano lessons will be a lot more likely to learn to love music.

Piano Lesson Advice for Parents Don’t Take it Personally

Posted by User Imageadmin on September 30, 2008

Parents can play an important role supporting their child’s piano lessons and their piano teacher. However, about a third of parents do too much and try to take over responsibility for their child’s progress, which hinders their child’s ability to develop positive learning skills on their own. In contrast, about a third of parents don’t do enough, and fail to support and can get in the way of their child’s learning. The remaining 1/3 gets it right. These parents have learned to work together with the piano teacher to support their child’s piano journey.

Parents who are not getting it right fail to effectively support their children in piano lessons because they either take too much responsibility for their child’s success or not enough. Getting this balance is important because it sets boundaries that create a positive learning environment where children can learn from their mistakes within limits. Parents’ attitudes about your child’s piano lessons matters for setting boundaries and teaching learning values. For example,

Regarding your child’s piano progress, do you

(a) feel personally embarrassed if your child is not progressing as fast as you think they should;

(b) want your child to do their best and learn how to achieve their goals;

(c) feel that it doesn’t really matter how your child is doing, as lessons aren’t that important anyway.

If you chose (a), you may be taking TOO much responsibility for your child’s success and creating dependency instead of fostering your child’s ownership and responsibility of their lessons. If you find yourself answering (c), you may well be abdicating part of your responsibility as a parent and may be missing out on a wonderful way to encourage your child’s success. If you have answered (b), relax. You’ve got the right attitude and are encouraging your child while helping them take their share of responsibility for their piano success. Keep it up!

I bought this pump because it was recommended. I am unhappy with the suction but am really disappointed with the little white disc/valve that’s inside. After a while, while you are pumping, it keeps popping out, you have to disassemble the entire pump, put the little disc back into its place and continue pumping. I have tried to buy replacements of the little white discs, but none of the stores selling the pump sell them. I was unable to find them online. I finally called Avent and spoke to a rep who told me that they replaced the discs with another part, which she’d ship out to me. I called Avent 2 days later to follow up on the order and was told that it was sent out by USPS and should get to me in 5-8 days. In the meantime, it is almost impossible for me to pump milk for my son without constantly taking the pump apart and reassembling it. Yesterday, I called again to tell Avent that I was very unhappy with the pump and the handling of the shipment. The rep I spoke to was actually helpful- she told me to boil the white valve in water and white vinegar, said that it might help the silicon to expand. It worked on one of the valves so far and I hope I’ll get the replacement parts soon to see if they are any better. I think what upsets me most is that Avent keeps selling the pumps with the valves even though they are aware of the fact that they wear out and need to be replaced.

I purchased this product purely by the rating that it got. And I’m glad I did. My Daughter loves it. She said it was so easy to use and it fits for e-z storage for traveling. She would recommed this 100@%. She has no complaints.

Review date : 2007-02-10
This has all the features needed as long as you don’t need to pump regularly (ie not returning to work). It is comfortable and EASY to use and get used to. It’s battery pack for pumping on the go is great too! Easy to clean and disassemble/reassemble. Great for pumping once a day, but I would suggest the Avent DUAL pump for working mothers pumping frequently, as it will save TIME.

Review date : 2007-01-10
I’ve been using this pump for about 6 weeks. I chose it over the Medela because I like the Avent bottles and wanted to stick to one product and be able to pump directly into the bottles I’d be using. I think it works great - when I had my daughter 4 years ago I tried the Avent manual pump and liked the design, but found the manaul pumping a little tedious. This has the same design, but does the pumping for you. I have found the motor strong using both electricity and the battery pack. The only drawback is that the motor is attached to suction cup, so you’re holding both while pumping and it gets a bit heavy - but I’m fine with it and like the overall simplicty of the design better than the Medela.

I use AVENT bottles, pacifiers and sterilizers. They are good products. But this pump does not live up to the AVENT name. First, the pumping mechanism broke after 15 days. We called AVENT and they asked me to send the pump in to have it fixed. But how was I supposed to express breast milk for a week??? Also, I do not produce tons of milk, and this pump took about 25 minutes to express each breast which makes it very inconvenient with a baby. In the end, through feedback from many friends, I chose to purchase a Medela, and I just want to share that it is amazing. I am done in 15 minutes tops. Yes, it is more expensive, but very much worth the price. I wish someone had shared this information before I bought the AVENT pump.

They are cute, but would be nicer if they were made of wood (not paper and cardboard that bends and deteriorates…)

Review date : 2008-08-06
We received these blocks as a gift about two weeks ago and we’ve already had to throw some blocks away. First of all, if your child chews on things, this is not the toy for you. My son has easily gnawed off bits of the blocks. Also, if the blocks are stepped on… they’re not stong enough to withstand the weight entirely, but they are solid enough to hurt your childs feet. The outer covering also started peeling away on the top of the blocks. Bummer…

Review date : 2008-06-30
I bought this for my two year old daughter for Christmas. I just knew she would love it. I was wrong. She played with it for about 5 minutes, and hasn’t touched it again since December. My four old tried to play with it, but the blocks are not made out of the most durable material.

Review date : 2008-05-11
These blocks are very cute, and my daughter loves playing with them. She is learning to stack and build. However, they are just made of cardboard and so they aren’t very durable. We’ve only had them a few weeks and already one of them is ripped along the edge, and she has also chewed off a couple of corners. So if you’re wanting a toy that will last through multiple children this is probably not it. They are cute though, and not a bad price,

Review date : 2008-05-08
My daughter loves these blocks, but they are not for the chewer. Because they are made of cardboard the corners are all ruined from her chewing. Also, some of the blocks glue came loose and the tops of the blocks (where the picture of the stars are) all unglued, I have to keep taking them away and using elmers glue to reattach them.

Piano Lesson Games For Kids Make Music Learning Fun

Posted by User Imageadmin on September 29, 2008

Generally young children who enjoy educational activities such as reading, coloring, crafts and word games also enjoy playing the piano. One reason is because they enjoy doing things with their hands. Did you know that there are games and activities available like this for young children that will give them a musical foundation as well? If you plan to give your young child piano lessons or if your child is taking piano lessons they can benefit greatly from musical games and activities at home. There are many foundational keyboard abilities children can learn at home while having fun that will give them a musical head start in piano. Here?s 5 of these.

1. Drawing and Visualizing the Piano Keyboard

2. Learning the musical alphabet in a variety of ways

3. Learning keyboard theory concepts for note reading

4. Learning to use their hands at the piano

5. Visualizing five-finger hand positions and finger numbers

This knowledge is not difficult to give your children at home. All you need are the right resources and of course a keyboard. You?ll be giving your child musical values and educational opportunities that will prepare them for a positive future of learning. Piano lessons also help children learn

? key reading and math skills;

? how to set goals to achieve their dreams; and

? the need for self discipline and persistence; and

? how to take responsibility for their success.

So take advantage of the early years and give your child even more of what they love to do with musical learning games and activities they?ll enjoy.

Skateboarding in the Sixties and Seventies

Posted by User Imageadmin on September 28, 2008

One of the biggest crazes to ever hit children and teenagers of our generation has been skateboarding. But how many of you know that it actually started as early as the 1950s and its popularity coincided with the surfing mania in California at that time? That’s true. In those early days, skateboards were all homemade and made of wooden planks that were attached to roller-skate trucks and wheels. It wasn’t even known as skateboarding yet, rather as “sidewalk surfing.” It’s best practitioners were guys who simply imitated the styles and moves of the top surfers of the time. Some people say skateboards merely evolved from “crate scooters” which looked exactly like a skateboard except that it had handlebars like a regular scooter.

When the sixties came around, skateboarding began to really take off. There were now skateboard manufacturers such as Hobie and Makaha which were actually top surfing manufacturers. Their early products looked much like the surfboards of the time. Skateboarding became so popular that a magazine dedicated to it was produced regularly. There was even an international skateboarding championship in 1965 that was telecast on national television. In terms of sales, records show that Makaha’s skateboard sales figures reached the $4 million mark from 1963 to 1965, which was truly a lot in those days. However, by 1965, the skateboard fad was over. Sales dropped significantly and the skateboarding magazine closed shop.

The second generation of skateboarders made their presence felt in the early seventies. It started when Frank Nasworthy was able to invent a skateboard wheel made out of polyurethane, which gave skateboarders improved traction and performance. The new product was such a big hit that skateboarding became in vogue among children and teens once again as well as many young adults. More companies tried to invent their own skateboarding innovations, including special axles that were designed specifically for skateboarding. And as the skateboards became more maneuverable and controllable, the decks began getting wider — as wide as 10 inches and sometimes over. There was a lot of experimentation in skateboards at the time, including the use of aluminum and fiberglass to replace the standard material for skateboards, maple plywood. Soon enough, the new craze was all about who could pull off the best tricks. And the best was yet to come.
